The Emergency First Aid at Work course offers the minimum level of first aid training for appointed persons. The aim of the course is to cover a number of First Aid subjects that will be necessary for anyone in the Appointed Person position in the workplace.

To What Standard is the Emergency Training?

The course is delivered to the standard required by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for Appointed Persons in the workplace.

What will the Course Teach Me?

The core skills that will be taught throughout the duration of the course include the aims and principles of First Aid, basic life support and the action required when an emergency occurs. The course also teaches how to manage someone who are unconscious as well as the assessment and treatment of:

  • A shocked, bleeding or wounded casualty
  • Fractures, soft tissue injuries and dislocations
  • Burns
  • AED (use of an AED, chain of survival)

It is necessary to carry out practical tasks throughout the course and therefore you must make sure that anyone taking the course is in a suitable condition to partake in the activities. The course helps businesses comply with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 which state that appropriate and adequate first aid equipment, people and facilities are available. The minimum first aid in your workplace requires an appointed person to take charge when first aid is required.

Who is the Training Aimed Towards?

This is a good starter course for anyone who is going to be placed in the role of Appointed Person in the workplace of low risk environments. The course is also ideal for people who are required to step into the appointed person role to cover absences. This is also a suitable course for all employees.

Will I Gain a Recognised First Aid Certificate?

A First Aid Certificate of Attendance to the Standard of Emergency First Aid for Appointed Person is awarded for successful completion of the Emergency First Aid at Work course.

What is the Duration?

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is completed in one day and is available in various locations all year round.

How is it Assessed?

There is no final test or examination; the tutor will perform continuous assessment throughout the duration of the course.

How will the Training Benefit My Employer?

Employees taking the Emergency First Aid at Work course will help to ensure employers are meeting some of the basic first aid requirements. The appointed person will be able to step in and take control of first aid situations.

When will the Certificate Expire?

Certification will expire in three years from the date on your certificate. If you would like to remain an Appointed Person for first aid in your workplace you will be required to resit the course again.

When I’ve Completed the Course Can I Study Further?

Yes. The course can also be used as a spring-board for further training, or for more extensive training the 3 Day First Aid at Work is a good alternative.

FAW or EFAW certificates that expired after 16 March 2020 can remain valid until 31 October 2020 or 6 months from date of expiry, whichever is later. All re-qualification training for these certificates should be completed by 31 March 2021.

To qualify for the extension, employers must be able to demonstrate that:

  • they have made every effort to arrange re-qualification training as soon as possible and can explain in detail why they have not been able to do so. For example, they must show evidence that staff with expired certificates are booked on to EFAW or FAW re-qualification courses,  if requested by an inspector
  • they have adequate and appropriate equipment and facilities to give first aid to any employee who is injured or becomes ill at work
  • the level of first aid cover provided remains appropriate for their particular work environment
  • the level of first aid provision necessary in high risk settings is fully maintained, eg in construction, agriculture, engineering and chemicals

This guidance now applies to employers in England, Scotland and Wales.
