IMPORTANT NOTICE: It is Possible to Attend this in ‘Virtual Trainer’ Format During COVID-19 Lockdown

These Scheme Rules have been implemented by CITB as a result of extraordinary circumstances impacting the regular provision of training to the construction industry. This measure is designed to maintain a level of training in the industry for existing Site Managers, ensuring a continued understanding of legislative changes and their impact on the workplace. The CITB SMSTS Refresher (Virtual Trainer) courses can be temporarily delivered remotely by a tutor over a video call.

Certificate Expiry – All delegates now have until 30 April 2021 to join a SMSTS refresher course, if their current certificate expired after the 01 December 2020.


Remain Qualified With the CITB SMSTS Refresher

The CITB SMSTS Refresher course ensures that anyone holding a site manager certificate is able to remain qualified. Throughout the course you will learn any changes in the law and regulations regarding health and safety in the workplace. Areas of change which are covered include the Approved Code of Practice, the Health and Safety Act and all legislations and regulations relating to the industry.

Candidates taking part in the SMSTS refresher training course will be updated in:

  • Recent changes in the construction legislation including the causes of accidents, the costs and why prevention is essential
  • Understanding the health and safety legal system
  • How to conduct risk assessments
  • Monitoring the health and safety performance on site
  • How to manage sub-contractors and communicate to all operatives and sub-contractors

The main elements of the SMSTS Refresher course include learning about the role of responsibility for all managers and supervisors. Controlling hazards and risks as well as measuring and performing health and safety audits.

If you wish to renew your current CITB qualification you must provide a copy of your original certificate and details of the course venue and the date you took the course if known.

Target Audience

The SMSTS Refresher course is aimed at managers, construction firm owners and supervisors who already have attended and passed the five-day SMSTS course. A valid certificate will need to be produced. Certificates last for five years and the refresher course is designed to ensure the right methods and skills used on site are up to date with the latest laws and regulations.

CITB Certification

If you pass you will be given the Site Safety Plus Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate which is valid for another five years. Every five years you will need to attend this two day renewal course before your existing certificate expires in order to remain qualified. In the event your existing certificate expires you will need to attend the full five day course again.

Course Duration

The CITB SMSTS Refresher course lasts for two days. You can find various training courses all over the country at frequent times throughout the year.

Assessment and Exam

Assessment is continuous and therefore you will be required to attend the full two days in order to pass. You will be assessed on the core exercises provided throughout the course, and a multi-choice paper consisting of 50 questions is given at the end of the two days.

Prior Learning

It is essential that you hold a current SMSTS certificate before attending this course, if not you will need to attend the five day course first.

Benefits of the Training

Employers benefit from having supervisors and managers which are fully trained and able to manage the health and safety on-site. This shows compliance with the law and helps to create a safe working environment.

Further Study

If you would like to study further we recommend the NEBOSH Construction Certificate in Health and Safety. This is an occupational health and safety qualification. The construction safety course is directly aimed at anybody who contributes to the day to day decisions taken within the working environment in the construction industry.


Delegates attending a refresher course, must bring with them their current valid CITB certificate. Failure to do so may result in them not being allowed to complete the refresher course. Delegates may also be asked to provide a copy at the time of booking.

All CITB Site Safety Plus courses advertised on our website include access to Construction Site Skills publications. Dependent on the accredited CITB training provider, delegates are given the option of taking away training materials in the following formats

  • hard copy workbooks
  • CD
  • access to a materials online
Confirmation will be provided via the joining instructions issued following receipt of full payment. Please check at the time of booking as to whether or not current hard copy publications are included in the cost.

CITB Levy Payers

To allow for the automated process of claiming back the training grant, please ensure that delegates attending courses, take the Levy Number & enter it on the relevant section of the course paperwork. Retrospective claims may not be accepted.
