IMPORTANT NOTICE: It is Possible to Attend this in ‘Virtual Trainer’ Format During COVID-19 Lockdown
All delegates who have an expiry date on their SMSTS certificates after the 15th of March 2020 now have until the 30th of November to refresh.
These Scheme Rules have been implemented by CITB as a result of extraordinary circumstances impacting the regular provision of training to the construction industry. This measure is designed to maintain a level of training in the industry for existing Site Supervisors, ensuring a continued understanding of legislative changes and their impact on the workplace. The CITB SSSTS (Virtual Trainer) courses can be temporarily delivered remotely by a tutor over a video call.
CITB SSSTS – Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme
The CITB SSSTS course is a required certificate for any supervisor working on the major contractors group sites. This qualification also referred to as the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme. Health and Safety training is a must for the construction industry, with thousands of serious accidents and many deaths occurring on-sites each year. The Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme course is designed to help improve the skills to increase health and safety awareness and management within the industry.
The main element of the CITB site supervisor course is the importance of risk assessments. Those attending the Site Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme will learn how to put in control measures and communicate with the entire workforce in a way to help ensure the site remains a safe place to work for everyone. Once the risk assessments have been completed supervisors will need to have the skills to ensure all of the advice and guidelines set out by the assessments are followed, and this is the course to help them achieve that.
The other core subjects taught on the tutor led training scheme include:
- The legal system regarding health and safety
- The health and Safety Acts and Regulations
- Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance Notes
- What causes accidents, the amount of accidents and the different types that occur in the construction industry
- Risk Assessments for the construction industry
The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme course has been approved by the MCB and is a recognised qualification in the construction industry.
- CITB Construction Skills (CSkills)
The CITB SSSTS courses are aimed towards anyone working in a supervisory role. This is also a good course to take if you are looking to work as a supervisor in the future.
You will need to attend a two day SSSTS training course which can be taken at a nearby training centre.
Assessment and Exam
The SSSTS training assessment is carried out through a multi choice question exam of thirty questions. Delegates who pass the exam are awarded with the CITB Site Supervisor Safety Training certificate and card to show their competence in health and safety.
Benefits of the Training
Employers benefit by having employees who are trained and hold a recognised qualification in site health and safety. Their site supervisors will contribute greatly to the health and safety on their construction sites.
The certificate is valid for five years and delegates wishing to refresh their certificate in due course are required to attend the one day SSSTS Refresher training before the expiry date on their existing certificate. In the event their existing certificate expires they will need to attend the full two day course again. Prior training is available in the form of the CITB 1 Day Health and Safety Awareness training.
CITB Course Materials and Work Books
All CITB course materials and work books are provided for the duration of the training.
Continued training is available and the next step to consider is the Site Management (SMSTS) version of the course. This is the natural step forward for site supervisors wishing to become site managers. By learning the skills taught throughout the course delegates will be able to work and manage health and Safety regulations effectively.
