CITB SMSTS Refresher
The CITB SMSTS Refresher course ensures that anyone holding a site manager certificate is able to remain qualified. Throughout the course you will learn any changes in the law and regulations regarding health and safety in the workplace. Areas of change which are covered include the Approved Code of Practice, the Health and Safety Act and all legislations and regulations relating to the industry.
Candidates taking part in the SMSTS refresher training course will be updated in:
Recent changes in the construction legislation including the causes of accidents, the costs and why prevention is essential
Understanding the health and safety legal system
How to conduct risk assessments
Monitoring the health and safety performance on site
How to manage sub-contractors and communicate to all operatives and sub-contractors
The main elements of the SMSTS Refresher course include learning about the role of responsibility for all managers and supervisors. Controlling hazards and risks as well as measuring and performing health and safety audits.
If you wish to renew your current CITB qualification you must provide a copy of your original certificate and details of the course venue and the date you took the course if known.
CITB Construction Skills (CSkills)
The SMSTS Refresher course is aimed at managers, construction firm owners and supervisors who already have attended and passed the five-day SMSTS course. A valid certificate will need to be produced. Certificates last for five years and the refresher course is designed to ensure the right methods and skills used on site are up to date with the latest laws and regulations.
If you pass you will be given the Site Safety Plus Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate which is valid for another five years. Every five years you will need to attend this two day renewal course before your existing certificate expires in order to remain qualified. In the event your existing certificate expires you will need to attend the full five day course again.
The CITB SMSTS Refresher course lasts for two days. You can find various training courses all over the country at frequent times throughout the year.
Assessment and Exam
Assessment is continuous and therefore you will be required to attend the full two days in order to pass. You will be assessed on the core exercises provided throughout the course, and a multi-choice paper consisting of 50 questions is given at the end of the two days.
It is essential that you hold a current SMSTS certificate before attending this course, if not you will need to attend the five day course first.
Benefits of the Training
Employers benefit from having supervisors and managers which are fully trained and able to manage the health and safety on-site. This shows compliance with the law and helps to create a safe working environment.
If you would like to study further we recommend the NEBOSH Construction Certificate in Health and Safety. This is an occupational health and safety qualification. The construction safety course is directly aimed at anybody who contributes to the day to day decisions taken within the working environment in the construction industry.
